What is the hazard perception test?
The HPT uses video situations to assess how you notice potential dangers and decide when to respond. It is about reading what is developing around you, rather than simply recalling a road rule.
The official test guidance describes 25 computer-generated videos. Allow approximately 15–30 minutes and complete the test in one sitting. A larger screen can make the situations easier to see.
When can you take it?
For the car HPT, you must have held your learner licence for at least six months. Learner drivers of all ages must pass it before booking a practical driving test. See the car HPT eligibility requirements.
The practical test has separate requirements. If you are under 25, your supervised driving hours normally need to be recorded in an approved learner logbook. Prepare for the situations ahead
- Try the official practice test before your first attempt.
- During supervised driving, talk through what you can see and what could change.
- Look well ahead as well as checking nearby traffic, pedestrians and intersections.
- Practise noticing gaps and choosing when to wait, rather than rushing a manoeuvre.
Use your driving lessons to work on situations you find difficult. Your instructor can help you connect hazard awareness with the decisions you make on the road.

How much does it cost?
Check the current Queensland test fee before paying. Payment gives access for up to 12 months; this is an access period, not a statement that your pass expires after 12 months.
What happens if I do not pass?
Queensland allows repeat attempts without a lock-out period. Take time to review the instructions and practise before trying again. The official HPT page explains the process.
